Walking is easily one of the best fitness routines. And, treadmills give you the added luxury of indulging in this exercise at the comfort of your home or gym. But then, the question you need to be asking yourself is – how do you choose an ideal treadmill? Should it be motorized or manual? Does a higher price ensure better workout?

This may not come as a surprise to you, that the exertion on a manual treadmill is higher than a motorized treadmill. Manual treadmills have a greater angle of incline and the running belt needs you to walk on it to physically move it and so the exertion is higher. Therefore, if you are a beginner opt for a motorized treadmill.

Irrespective of the model you choose, a good pair of running shoes is very important. Since this write-up is not about shoes, let’s talk about treadmills.

Here are some tips to remember when you buy a treadmill

  • A higher BHP motor – The bigger the HP, the longer the treadmill lasts. Depending on the kind of activity that is going to be predominant – walking or running, choose the motor. Experts believe that a 2.0 HP motor works best for running and walking.
  • Adjustable angle of incline: Normally, the angle of inclination is not changeable in most treadmills. The higher the angle of inclination, the better your cardio workout. The more regularly you exercise, the fitter you’re going to get and you’d soon want to increase the incline.
  • The width and cushion of the running belt – Avoid the narrow ones because you might end up bumping into the sides very often while you run. The cushion on the running belt is also very important. It goes a long way in reducing the aches and wear-out of muscles. Generally, a belt of 16 inches width and 45 inches length is preferred.
  • Storage: No matter how big your exercise room is, a treadmill that occupies less space while not in use and is easy to fold and move is always a better buy.

A simple fact to keep in mind is that it is not the price or the brand name of a treadmill that makes it effective. It is how regular you are with your workout that brings about the difference.

Choose well and stay committed to your routine.
